Summer is a busy season in my part of the USA. The weather and long days entice us outside where we work in the yard, swim at local lakes and pools, walk, grill, ride bikes, and visit with an endless stream of in-town and out-of-town guests.
Emily’s post on hospitality was a great reminder for me this week. We had some of my husband’s old college friends visit from out-of-town on top of a crazy-packed schedule. I swallowed my pride and served take-out pizza on paper plates in the back yard. I still ran around like a madwoman the hour before people arrived vacuuming, wiping down toilets and sweeping floors. I’m not quite ready to let my house look too real.
Strawberries are in season so we headed out to a local farm to pick one morning. My kids were entirely focused on eating copious amounts of berries and running along the rows. I think they contributed a grand total of four berries to our basket. They were also obsessed with “the little house in the field” (aka the outhouse). They persuaded/hoodwinked me into making multiple visits throughout the morning.
In spite of my little non-helpers, we left the fields at noon with plenty of strawberries, which I’ll use to make spinach and strawberry salad with grilled chicken on top, these strawberry rhubarb muffins for my gluten-free husband, and this Triple Berry Rhubarb Crisp!
