Laundry, Miller-style

We don’t have a style actually. I used to have a laundry day where I washed all clothes and another day devoted to washing sheets and towels. Now I’m stuck somewhere in no-man’s land between life with a “small” family of four and a “large” family of five. Now I do laundry on an as-need basis, which feels almost constant especially with loads of cloth diapers thrown into the mix.

Last week we graduated from a one to two hampers. One hamper upstairs and one downstairs. So that’s progress.

I am a member of the band wagon that thinks we have too much chemical exposure in modern American life. So for detergent I use a giant jug of Ecos from Costco and add baking soda to the load of whites. On the rare days that the sun shines, I’ll throw lights out to dry in the sun as Emily also mentioned. For really bad stains on my husband’s work shirts, I just started using the Classic Pre-Wash from Amway. It’s probably full of chemicals but its working really well and no one has had an allergic reaction yet.

My mother-in-law, with six children, always did her laundry on Mondays and Thursdays, so I adopted her plan. Depending on how many were still in the household, I’d have 3-5 loads each of those days. Children always helped fold because that was how I was brought up. I didn’t do too well teaching my children how to do their own laundry as they got able, which I would work harder on now if I had it to do over. This sounds pretty ridiculous, but because married life with children was filled with unknowns and fearful challenges, laundry was a safe haven for me. Though I was never too good with stains, I knew how to sort and wash the clothes and felt accomplished when everything was folded and put away. I was never behind on the laundry because of this. The rest of housework was another story!

Right now my laundry plan goes like this: do it all day and every day and maybe it will be enough! = )
